NEVER HAVE I EVER by JOSHILYN JACKSON

Never Have I Ever

In this game, even winning can be deadly…

Amy Whey with her perfect husband, great step-daughter and baby Oliver, has a life she loves. A life she created. She has great friends, a job she loves teaching scuba lessons and a book club of friends. But her best friend is Char. They are a perfect little group of ordinary women.

Life is good until one day there is a new woman on the block. A woman with a fancy red sports car and a teenaged son. Angelica Roux. Even her name sounds seductive. When she insinuates herself into their lives by showing up at their book club, Amy’s internal alarm system is going off. This woman is dangerous. Instead of reading the book, she suggests a game of Never Have I Ever and Amy knows this creature knows her deepest, ugliest secret. One that could ruin everything she has built and cost her everyone in her life.

When Roux gets Amy alone she confirms Amy’s fears. But for the paltry sum of a quarter of a million dollars, Roux will quietly be on her way. Amy has no intention of giving Roux anything. And so begins Amy’s plan to find out just who Roux is and how she even knows about Amy. In a race against the clock, she takes a big gamble and tries to beat Roux at her own game.

This was a twisty one! Secrets, Lies, Betrayals, the sins of our youth coming back to haunt us. The closer I got to the end, the faster I read. She did what??? He’s who??? Oh my gosh!

Well Done!

SUNBURN by LAURA LIPPMAN

Sunburn

One is playing a long game. But which one?

Blurb:

They meet at a local tavern in the small town of Belleville, Delaware. Polly is set on heading west. Adam says he’s also passing through.

Yet she stays and he stays—drawn to this mysterious redhead whose quiet stillness both unnerves and excites him. Over the course of a punishing summer, Polly and Adam abandon themselves to a steamy, inexorable affair. Still, each holds something back from the other—dangerous, even lethal, secrets that begin to accumulate as autumn approaches, feeding the growing doubts they conceal.

Then someone dies. Was it an accident, or part of a plan? By now, Adam and Polly are so ensnared in each other’s lives and lies that neither one knows how to get away—or even if they want to. Is their love strong enough to withstand the truth, or will it ultimately destroy them?

Something—or someone—has to give.

Which one will it be?

My Take:

This one started out at 100 mph and didn’t let up! Lippman has given us a suspenseful tale that took me on a wild ride of What? Who? What? This one was like a Rubik’s Cube. I was changing my mind all the way to the end. And that ending!

Polly is an unlikeable character. Adam is a very likable character. Irving is a jerk. Even though she appeared to be cold and calculating I wanted to find out why. What is the truth and who is going to die in order to keep a plan alive.

Are they in love? Who is using who? Is one of them a killer? Let’s just say Lippman has this layering of suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat!

Thanks to William Morrow for the copy!

GIRL IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR by Kelsey Rae Dimberg

Girl in the Rearview Mirror: A Novel by [Dimberg, Kelsey Rae]

I never meant to lie. That is, I never wanted to.

Philip and Marina Martin. Phoenix royalty. He, the son of a current Senator and She, the director of Phoenix’s Fine Art Museum. Their four-year-old daughter, Amabel completes the beautiful family.

Finn eagerly gives up her office job for a job as Amabel’s nanny. She is a bit impressed with all of the glitz of the family’s lifestyle but more important to her is that she feels included, part of their family.

Much like the movies, it is all just a facade. Behind the doors, you can cut the tension with a butter knife!  When one day a young woman asks Finn to give a message to Philip, a chain of events that will lead to everyone’s secrets, including Finns, coming out of the closet!   Choices will be made and truths open to the hot Phoenix sun.

Political Thriller, Psychological Thriller, this has it all!

Walking Shadows by Faye Kellerman

Walking Shadows (Peter Decker/Rina Lazarus, #25)

A Decker/Lazarus Novel #25

Detective Peter Decker and his wife, Rina Lazarus, risk life and limb to solve a pair of brutal murders that may be tied to a crime from more than twenty years ago in this intense and addictive mystery from New York Times bestselling author Faye Kellerman.

Peter Decker thought living in the small town of Greenbury, New York would be so much quieter than being with the LAPD. But when the body of Brady Neil, 26, is discovered beaten and his body dumped in the woods it’s going to take everyone in two jurisdictions to figure this one out.

Brady’s father is in prison for robbing a jewelry store and murdering the two owners. Along with his partner, Kyle. While they admit to the robbery they are adamant the owners were alive when they left. With his temporary partner, Lennie Baccus, daughter of the Hamilton police chief who handled the original murders, Decker starts asking a lot of questions.

And his first one is Where is Brady’s best friend Boxer? Heading out to find him, they instead find a blood bath inside the house and Boxer’s mother, confined to a wheelchair, tied up and close to death herself.

With Rina researching the past and present list of characters and Tyler and Kevin digging into what really happened to the Levines long ago and how all of these people fit together, this was like a Rubik’s Cube!

Is there corruption in the Hamilton police force? The more they dig, the twistier it gets.

Big fan of Decker and Lazarus and this was a good one!
