CARDINAL SIN by J.R.RIPLEY

I can hardly believe this is the 9th Bird Lover’s Mystery!

Birds & Bees owner Amy Simms will need help from her fine-feathered friends when an uncommon bird sighting plunges her into a hornet’s nest of black magic and murder most foul . . .

Amy is enjoying a little down time in her shop Birds & Bees. Things are slow until a woman comes in looking to purchase some bees. After helping her out with that information, the woman introduces herself as Yvonne Rice, a new face in Ruby Lake. Exotic and intriguing, Amy accepts her dinner invitation after seeing a photo Yvonne took in her yard of a rare yellow cardinal. Bringing as her plus 1 Kim.

While Amy has gotten an appropriate house warming gift, Kim has decided to re-gift the Lord of Death statue that neither of them wants. As Yvonne brings out a Ouija Board and has most of them on board to have a go, a mysterious message pops us. I. Am. Murdered.

Confused and a little bothered by the odd folks living around the pond, Amy is just starting to dig into Yvonne when the poor woman is found dead in her home. While there is an escaped convict in the area, this looks very suspicious, as do all the residents there.

Or is there some VooDoo going on with the Lord of Death? No matter, Amy is on the case and she isn’t letting anyone tell her no.

This series has grown so much over time. I used to think of Amy as rather a dull character, easily duped and not standing up for herself. Now, you better take this gal seriously! You hear that Ex-Amy??

The characters, the birds, the entire town of Ruby Lake is looking really good to me right now!

Well Done!

A BIRDER’S GUIDE TO MURDER by J.R.RIPLEY

A Bird Lover’s Mystery #8

Amy and her gaggle of bird loving friends have unexpectedly been invited to participate in the American Birding Expo in Philadelphia. A last-minute invite and a trip with the entire gang, including Esther the Pester. This could be a very bad thing for Amy but a good thing for her shop Birds and Bees.

Things begin going badly as soon as they check in to the motel. Esther is acting oddly even for her. Frank, Karl and Derek must share a room which means Esther and Amy are bunking together. Oh Joy!

Amy manages to insult a famous bird photographer who is also the guest of honor. And Esther is disappearing every few minutes. When she drags Amy into a bathroom where said guest of honor is no longer in the land of the living, Amy is beginning to think she should have run a background check on her tenant a long time ago. Through cemeteries, Zombie Conventions and a whole lot of shady people, this story is the best so far. We found out a lot about Miss Esther and there may be some love in the air as well.

This series is one of my favorites. By now I am so invested in each of these wonderful characters I can’t wait for the next one to come out!

Well Done!

Beignets and Broomsticks: A Maggie Miller Mystery by J.R.Ripley

It’s Halloween, and cafe owner Maggie Miller’s special pumpkin spice beignet promotion is proving popular. But the evening ends in disaster when Maggie discovers the body of one of her regular customers, strangled to death with an expensive cashmere scarf.

The late Nancy Alverson had tended to keep herself to herself – but what secrets was she hiding? And why had she been studying books on witchcraft?

Of one thing Maggie is certain, it was no witch who killed Nancy. But has someone taken advantage of the spookiest night of the year to commit a brutal murder . . .?

Maggie just can’t keep her nose on her own side of the street. If there is a mystery that needs solving, Maggie is your girl.

Table Rock is a quirky town full of equally quirky people and Maggie fits right in! Still in the trial and error phase of her Beignet Cafe’, Maggie is busy coming up with new flavors and with her recent purchase, she is venturing in to the espresso business as well.

When she heads across the street to deliver some beignets to Nancy, who is living above Maggie’s competition, Karma Koffee, she literally runs into VV, the town prosecutor and worst enemy of Maggie. When she sees Nancy dead with a cashmere scarf around her neck, she thinks the worst.

When she is threatened it only makes her more determined to find out who killed Nancy and why. And what does any of this have to do with the strangers in town or the Witchkraft Center just out-of-town?

Maggie will have to whip up more than beignets to solve this one! Maggie is becoming more confident in herself and her abilities and this series is devoloping nicely!

CHICKADEE CHICKADEE BANG BANG: A Bird Lover’s Mystery #5) by J.R.Ripley

Chickadee Chickadee Bang Bang by J.R. Ripley

I am seriously considering moving to Ruby Lake! They have more fun events than any small town I have ever lived in!

It’s time for the annual Fall Festival, with the Tractor and Car Show being one of the most popular and competitive events.

As our Amy is leading a group of birdwatchers in the park most of the group is looking at a Chickadee in the tree. Karl and Floyd however have spotted something white and teal that definitely is not a bird, but a ’57 Chevy Bel Air going down the street.

Karl and Floyd soon have Amy taking them to find their own oldie but goodie so for once they can be part of the parade of cars. Even Amy’s sweetie and her neighbor Paul have caught the car fever.

When Amy decides to sneak a peek at the mysterious El Morroco that Chick supposedly has, the first person she runs into is Chick. Plan fouled. But when she returns to find her cell phone she finds Chick dead under the coveted car.

By now even the police chief is used to Amy snooping around crime scenes, so at least she isn’t being kept out of the loop, but there are always some shady folks hanging around this tiny town and the suspect list even includes some locals. But don’t worry because our girl Amy will peck around like a bird after a worm until she finds the truth!

We are in book 5 in this series now and the characters are developing nicely and I learned about another lovely bird.

Job well done Mr. Ripley!

TO KILL A HUMMINGBIRD BY J.R.RIPLEY *RELEASE DAY*

To Kill a Hummingbird (A Bird Lover's Mystery #4)

For Amy Simms, owner of Birds & Bees, nothing is more important than impressing her old professor, but this odd bird is about to fall to earth . . .

When her favorite ornithology professor comes calling, Birds & Bees owner Amy Simms hangs six hummingbird feeders around the shop to welcome Professor Livingston with a flock of his favorite flying creatures. But Amy soon finds that the sugar-water in the feeders brings more than a swarm of hummingbirds. It also attracts murder.

Professor Livingston is just as friendly as Amy remembers, but something seems to be troubling him. When Amy pays him a visit that night, she finds the professor slumped over a table with a pair of scissors buried in his neck. And standing over his body is Rose Smith, the local bookseller, who claims she killed him. But while the police believe they have a bird in hand, Amy thinks the real killer may still be in the bush . . .

Continuing on with the Bird Lover’s Mystery Series, we find our Amy all a twitter over her old professor coming to town. He has a new book about hummingbirds out and is coming to Ruby Lake for a book signing.

From the moment he pulls up in his tiny bird house home on wheels, something is off. And when Amy finds him after the book signing dead and the bookshop owner calmly admitting she did it, something isn’t sitting right with Amy.

Of course our girl can’t sit back and wait to find out what is going on and soon she’s flitting all over town, looking for answers. And there is no lack of shady characters for her to focus on.

I’ve never been a bird person, until this series!  I love a story that entertains and teaches me something new. I never knew there were  so many types of hummingbirds! And they are adorable. The characters in this series are quickly becoming like family and I think that’s a pretty good sign of a well written series!

Well done, once again Mr. Ripley!
