THE CROHN’S DISEASE COOKBOOK by Amanda Foote,RD

Never have I been happier than the day this book arrived! Finally someone who understands Crohn’s Disease!

Whether you have just been diagnosed or like me, have been doing the best you can to avoid flares and figure out how to eat to keep yourself healthy and alive!

There are customized meal plans as well as food to eat during and after a flare up. And there is a lot of information on CD and other issues that may come with it. I have CD along with Celiac and Lactose Intolerance. All the women on my mother’s side have this. No one talked about it. We jokingly called it our secret diet since you eat and then you spend hours crying in the bathroom feeling as if you are giving birth to a large demon.

This cookbook has opened up a lot of options for me. I don’t do soy either and I was happy to see I could substitute with almond milk. The Bone Broth recipe was my favorite. That may seem odd but during and after a flare this is one of the only things I can eat. I can tolerate some meats but I don’t like meat so roasted chicken and salmon are the only ones I eat and then only after a flare.

And it’s hard to know what will kick off a flare. For example yesterday I was feeling too lazy to get out of the pool so I just grabbed two small pieces of OU Boy’s beef jerky. It was peppered. It took all of 5 minutes before I was running to the bathroom and I have been in pain since then. That is a flare.

Love the book and grateful to the author!

BETWEEN THE LIES by MICHELLE ADAMS

Between the Lies

What would you do if you woke up and didn’t know who you were?

Within the first few pages of this thriller you just know it’s going to be good!

Chloe Daniels wakes up in a hospital bed having no idea how she got there, who she is or who these people calling themselves family are. Very scary.

Back in her parents home she struggles to remember what happened to her and as she snatches glimpses of her past she begins to believe her family are telling some pretty bad lies. What was she running from that night her car crashed? Even the police seem suspicious of the circumstances.

When she discovers one of the cruelest lies she has been told, she sets out to find the truth about who she was and who she can trust.

I felt so horrible for Chloe. She honestly had no one in her corner. And what a psychological thriller it was. I had no idea that ending was coming!

Another job well done!

BE OUR GHOST by KATE KINGSBURY

Be Our Ghost: A Merry Ghost Inn Mystery

This is the second book in A Merry Ghost Inn Mystery.

If bed-and-breakfast owners Melanie and Liza, along with their laughing ghost tenant, can’t find a real estate developer’s killer, their own estate will end up with their next of kin.

Melanie and her grandmother, Liza, along with their resident ghost Orville/Arthur, are doing very well with their Bed and Breakfast on the Oregon coast. Sully’s Landing is such a charming town and everyone would like it to stay that way.

When an outside real estate developer tries to bulldoze his way in with ideas of a huge arcade taking the place of long-established businesses, the locals are divided and some would rather see the man rot in hell.

But when their friend Doug is taken in for questioning, Liza insists they clear his name.
But will it be at the cost of their own lives? Because the killer is leaving some pretty harsh hints for them to keep their curious noses out of other people’s business!
The love and friendship between Melanie and her grandmother, Liza, is a beautiful theme in these mysteries. Melanie is still searching for her missing mother but will the ladies live long enough to find out any news?
I read this entire book with a pot of tea and the rain pelting my windows and it was a perfect afternoon.

The LITTLE SHOP OF FOUND THINGS by Paula Brackston

The Little Shop of Found Things (The Little Shop of Found Things #1)

The Little Shop of Found Things Book 1

A new series about a young woman whose connection to antiques takes her on a magical adventure, reminiscent of Outlander

New York Times bestselling author of The Witch’s Daughter Paula Brackston returns to her trademark blend of magic and romance to launch a new series guaranteed to enchant her audience even more.

First can we agree this is a beautiful cover. As for the genre, Historical Fiction/Fantasy/Science Fiction/Adult Fiction. Yes, that is a lot but I don’t know what to call it when the setting is present day England but there is a ghost and some time travel involved. All rolled into this wonderful book that I did not stop reading once I started.

Xanthe Westlake and her mother Flora have had a rough time of it in London and have invested their life savings in an antique shop in Marlborough. Determined to make a new life and leave the past behind. Hard to do in an antique shop. Especially as we find out our Xanthe has some pretty awesome gifts.

Sometimes when she touches things she can hear them. Telling the stories of where they have been and what they were. When Xanthe picks up a chatelaine at an estate sale, it is doing more than singing to her. She is having visions and feelings of danger.

When she finds an odd-shaped building in the back garden, exactly where two ley lines converge, she is transported to the 1600’s. When she returns she finds a not so friendly ghost waiting who threatens her and her mothers safety.

Now Xanthe must return to try to save the ghost’s daughter from the gallows. Along the way she meets a gorgeous architect and tries to save Alice and her mother.

The rest you will have to read yourself. I absolutely loved this book and am so glad there will be more of them.

Well Done!

JAR of HEARTS By JENNIFER HILLIER

Jar of Hearts

“Jar of Hearts grabs you by the throat! The perfect blend of riveting characters, chilling details, and gasping twists in this standout thriller will keep you frantically reading until the explosive end.” – Lisa Gardner, New York Times bestselling author of Right Behind You

This is the story of three best friends: one who was murdered, one who went to prison, and one who’s been searching for the truth all these years . . .

When she was sixteen years old, Angela Wong—one of the most popular girls in school—disappeared without a trace. Nobody ever suspected that her best friend, Georgina Shaw, now an executive and rising star at her Seattle pharmaceutical company, was involved in any way. Certainly not Kaiser Brody, who was close with both girls back in high school.

But fourteen years later, Angela Wong’s remains are discovered in the woods near Geo’s childhood home. And Kaiser—now a detective with Seattle PD—finally learns the truth: Angela was a victim of Calvin James. The same Calvin James who murdered at least three other women.

To the authorities, Calvin is a serial killer. But to Geo, he’s something else entirely. Back in high school, Calvin was Geo’s first love. Turbulent and often volatile, their relationship bordered on obsession from the moment they met right up until the night Angela was killed.

For fourteen years, Geo knew what happened to Angela and told no one. For fourteen years, she carried the secret of Angela’s death until Geo was arrested and sent to prison.

While everyone thinks they finally know the truth, there are dark secrets buried deep. And what happened that fateful night is more complex and more chilling than anyone really knows. Now the obsessive past catches up with the deadly present when new bodies begin to turn up, killed in the exact same manner as Angela Wong.

How far will someone go to bury her secrets and hide her grief? How long can you get away with a lie? How long can you live with it

The Book Blurb tells you a good overview. But the devil is in the details and there is more than one devil in this thriller!

Geo is secretly relieved when the police come for her in her shining office tower. Rich, respected and engaged to the head of the company. She has built her life on the events of that fateful night with Angela and Calvin but she never forgot. She knew the day would come when she would have to answer for her part in her friend’s death.

And she did. Kind of. But when she returns to her hometown not everyone is happy to see her. And then the bodies start coming. And all she can think is Calvin is back. But she is so wrong and so was I!

This was a don’t stop reading until it’s over book. Brilliantly twisted and the plot twists just kept coming!  I will definitely be in line for the next book from this author!

The Pisces by Melissa Broder

The Pisces

Lucy has been writing her dissertation about Sappho for thirteen years when she and Jamie break up. After she hits rock bottom in Phoenix, her Los Angeles-based sister insists Lucy housesit for the summer—her only tasks caring for a beloved diabetic dog and trying to learn to care for herself. Annika’s home is a gorgeous glass cube atop Venice Beach, but Lucy can find no peace from her misery and anxiety—not in her love addiction group therapy meetings, not in frequent Tinder meetups, not in Dominic the foxhound’s easy affection, not in ruminating on the ancient Greeks. Yet everything changes when Lucy becomes entranced by an eerily attractive swimmer one night while sitting alone on the beach rocks.

I can tell this will be a love or hate book. I wanted to like it, but it was just too sad. Lucy needs more than group therapy. She needs intensive work with mental health professionals and not a group of woman who believe they are addicted to love.

Lucy is close to 40 and really should know better. But she doesn’t. She is self-destructive and careless with other people’s lives. I don’t think there is much  humor in sex addictions or self harming. There was not a funny moment in this book. It just felt exploitive and very sad.

WHISPER THE DEAD~An Alex Duggins Mystery by STELLA CAMERON

Whisper the Dead: A Cotsworld Village Mystery

This is the 5th book in this series.

When Alex Duggins comes across a terrifying scene at the site of a new housing development, once again she is drawn into a case of brutal murder.

A new year arrives and winter holds Britain’s Cotswold Hills in its icy grip once more. But it’s the construction of a new housing development that’s causing the residents of Folly-on-Weir most concern. As she passes the site late one afternoon, pub owner Alex Duggins is confronted by the terrifying scene of a construction trailer on fire and a man desperately trying to break the door down.

Her efforts to help – and the subsequent findings of the police forensic pathologist – draw Alex and her friend Tony Harrison into a major murder investigation whose tentacles will reach right to the heart of the tight-knit Folly community – and into Alex’s own past …

Alex and her mother Lily have a close relationship, but there have always been things her mother just won’t talk about. While she knows a little of the past, her mother and the people who knew her when Alex was a baby aren’t talking about it either.

After all the chatter around the pub about the new development, Alex takes a drive to see for herself. After almost getting run off the road on the way, she is definitely not expecting to find a fire and someone injured!

From there the oddest characters seem to be coming out of the woodwork! Everyone is acting odd and Alex is determined to find out why and who is frightening her mother?

I really enjoy Brit Lit. And I like this series. And there is a shocker of an ending! Eagerly awaiting the next one!

BAD COPS *A Henry Christie Thriller* by NICK OLDHAM

Bad Cops (Henry Christie #25)

This is number 25 in this series.

Two seemingly unconnected murders lead DCI Henry Christie to uncover a terrifying conspiracy in this gritty police procedural.

Two murders, apparently unconnected: one victim shot to death in his office, the other brutally stabbed in what appears to have been a road rage incident … neither case solved.

Six months later, following a desperate plea from a chief constable, Detective Superintendent Henry Christie finds himself travelling across the country to carry out an urgent review of the two killings. His investigations will plunge him into a terrifying world of murder and corruption and find him pitted against a well-organized group who seem to anticipate his every move.

Henry Christie is about to discover just how bad life can be when some backs are against the wall …

This is the 25th book in this series by Nick Oldham.

With Henry still recuperating from a gunshot to the shoulder in his last adventure, he’s not sure he is up to the job being dumped in his lap. Against his girlfriends wishes and his own groaning shoulder, he accepts anyway.

This time he is up against more than just random murders. This is not being able to trust anyone in the department while he investigates not only the murders, but the cops themselves, who see him as something they need to get rid of before their entire sordid plans and corruption are found out. Will he even make it out of the police station?

Nick Oldham is a solid crime thriller author. The plots are always good, the characters are interesting. I can’t wait to see what’s next for Henry!

I really felt sorry for Rose. Trying to separate from a man she doesn’t even have feelings for. Re-living past tragedies, Rose will have to face her own past head on before she loses everything.

A nail biter to the end!

THE EASTER MAKE BELIEVERS By Finn Bell

The Easter Make Believers

When an innocent family is taken hostage in their home no one is ready for how fast it all goes terribly wrong. As the close knit community of small town Lawrence reels from the shock, detectives Nick Cooper and Tobe White stand among the dead bodies knowing that it’s not over. Because while grateful that at least the two young daughters survived unscathed, they now know that their father is still missing, somehow impossibly vanishing from a house surrounded by police. The mystery deepens as Nick and Tobe realize that they know every gunman lying dead here – because up to last night they were the leaders of the biggest criminal gang in the country. As the desperate search and rescue mission starts it soon collides with their own challenging investigation leading them into the centre of a deeper, older tragedy. Where they begin to learn just how far someone will go for those he truly, dearly hates.

Set in New Zealand during a late snowstorm, which has its own voice in the book, Nick and Tobe are called to a scene that goes from bad to worse. A family being held hostage in their own home. And Nick recognizes them all as a family of gang members. Why are a bunch of gang members here in this tiny town with a family tied up and held hostage?

When snipers take out the targets inside, an explosion is set off and the father and one of the known gang members is missing. Where did they go?

As Nick and Tobe strike out to find where the tunnel went and where the missing men went, the storm hits. Stuck in blizzard conditions and having no luck finding them, they duck into a mine entrance and that is where everything is turned upside down and the author leaves us with our mouths hanging open! Plot Twist!

A really great thriller! Well Done Mr. Bell!
