the summer of lost and found by Mary Alice Monroe

The Summer of Lost and Found

From the Queen of the Beach Reads comes Ms. Monroe’s latest.

I love this Beach series. Maybe because Charleston is my ancestral home as well. All the names and places are familiar to me and I feel like I’m reading a letter from home.

The Rutledge family has always been a part of Charleston. The family has seen hard times and wonderful times. They have found love and lost it. But the one place they have always come to heal is the beach house from Grandma Lovie. It’s the one sure thing. So when Linnea needs a place to stay after Covid forces layoffs at the marine center, it’s to the cottage she goes.

Across the street Cara waits for David to return from London with little Hope by her side. When he returns he is already sick and must quarantine himself in his room while Hope goes to stay with Linnea. And who should also be in quarantine but John right next door.

Everyone is worried and afraid for their loved ones. Linnea’s boyfriend Gorden finally arrives from London and again goes into quarantine. Now both men she cares for are right next door. What’s a girl to do?

This book was written during Covid. We can all sympathize with the family as we are living it along with them.

But never fear, the ending had me in a puddle on the floor and yet feeling hopeful.

THE WOMAN OUTSIDE MY DOOR by RACHEL RYAN

The Woman Outside My Door

Georgina has had a rough time of it lately. Her mother dying, work, her suspicions about her husband having an affair with an Ex.

So when her son, Cody, begins talking and giggling with his ‘imaginary’ friend more and more, even calling her New Granny, her instincts tell her something is off here.

Sure children have imaginary friends. But they aren’t known for giving them candy and chatting on the phone.

There is really no communication between Georgina and her husband, Bren. He keeps lying and thinks his wife may be off her rocker.

But a mother knows these things and she will do anything she has to in order to protect her child. Even though her husband thinks there is nothing wrong and she should let it lie, she isn’t going to.

The wrap up was totally shocking! So I’ll let you enjoy that!

Well Done.

On Ocean Boulevard by Mary Alice Monroe

On Ocean Boulevard

We are back with Cara and the Rutledge family in Charleston, South Carolina.

Cara returned to her roots sixteen years ago. Since then she’s married, been widowed and has a baby! She has been through some of life’s cruelest situations. Now, she is still working at the aquarium and turtle rescue as well as planning her own wedding! Yes, Cara is getting married again.

Now it’s time for her niece to come home. Linnea went to California with big dreams of a career and hopefully a husband. Neither has happened and now she is back on Sullivan’s Island living with her parents and feeling discombobulated. Her parents are holding up well after they lost everything and moved to the island. Palmer seems to be doing well building a house on Cara’s lot and Julia is finding herself as well.

Just when it seems as if they all may come out all right, a major illness strikes and everything comes to an abrupt halt. But we know these people. Together they can move mountains. And just like the turtles that return every year to their beach, they too will find strength in their love for one another and their family.

I adore this series. My momma is a Charleston girl and when I read Monroe’s books I actually know most of these names! Personally, we are Pinckney’s. There is so much family love and tradition in these stories that now is the perfect time to read this!

Thanks so much Ms. Monroe!

behind every lie by Christina McDonald

Behind Every Lie

Highly charged suspense and a feeling of urgency, make this a great read and I wouldn’t have expected otherwise given her prior work!

Eva Hansen remembers blood and pain. When she wakes in the hospital to discover she has been struck by lightning and she can’t remember a thing. She was found in the street covered in blood, close to her own mother’s home, where police have discovered her mother murdered.

Told from the points of view of Eva and Kat, this was intense. With everyone looking at her suspiciously and thinking she must have killed her mother, Eva leaves Seattle for London, where her mother’s story began. But someone is following her every move and she may be the next to die. At this point with her memory in tatters, she even doubts herself.

Family secrets. Oh my what a tangled web they can be and these were deadly! A twisty, twisted, horrible, edge of your seat read! I can’t wait to see what is next for Ms. McDonald!

I loved every twisted moment of it!

Please See Us by Caitlin Mullen

Please See Us

Two young women, unlikely friends, both find themselves in Atlantic City.  Summer in AC used to be a time of packed boardwalks, casinos, and tourists. But no more. The only people out on the marshland are two dead women. Jane Does. Laid out behind a seedy hotel.

Clara, who is just a teenager, lives with her aunt and works as a boardwalk psychic to help pay the rent. The aunt was a real piece of work. When Clara begins having real visions after a visit from the father of a missing girl, she thinks the visions may be about her. And then more women go missing.

Lily, who used to work in the art gallery world, is just starting a job at the spa in town. She has had enough of her own drama to overcome but that won’t stop her from teaming up with Clara to find the girls who are still going missing.

But did they put their trust in the wrong person? Will they both come out alive?

This was eerie and heartbreaking. I loved the characters, even the wicked ones are done so well. Very good read!

Remember The Night Olivia Fell?  Welcome to the author’s next domestic suspense thriller!

The Sisters of Summit Avenue by Lynn Cullen @GalleryBooks

sisters

Secrets, Betrayals, lies, and half-truths. This beautiful story is told through the eyes of Dorothy, mother to June and Ruth, as well as the two daughters. From the past and in the present.

Dorothy has led a hard and sometimes unfair life. Her parents lived and worked for a wealthy family and Dorothy grew up with their son Edward. But when she gets in the family way she is quickly kicked to the curb. Even as she marries a good man, she is still waiting for Edward to come for her.

Dorothy is a woman who doesn’t understand how to show love and affection to her children. She loves them terribly but has never learned how to show them.

Everyone has a point of view in this one. June thinks Ruth stole her soul mate. Ruth thinks June gets everything she wants and is the favorite. Now Ruth is living the farm life with John who has sleeping sickness. She hates her life and wants Junes. June wants her soul mate back but has instead settled with a rich doctor and is one of the “Bettys” of the Crocker plant.

When Dorothy calls June home, she comes and brings her husband who may have a cure for the sleeping sickness. But if John wakes up, how much of what has been happening will he know?

With 3 sisters of my own, I recognize this story! We all wanted what the other one had. Until we lost it and found out all we really wanted was to be loved and content with what we had. But as Dorothy would say, “We aren’t dead yet.”

Full of heartbreak, love, forgiveness and the love of family, this was a beautifully written book!

RELEASE DAY! the arrangement by robyn harding Congrats! @rhardingwriter @GalleryBooks @NetGalley

arrangement

Natalie has left behind the Pacific Northwest and an ex-boyfriend who won’t take no for an answer, and fled to the Big Apple! She is an artist and between struggling to pay her rent, her tuition, and food, she isn’t left with much.

While her roommates’ plot to get her out of the apartment due to her constant lateness with the bills as well as bringing home guys. She is stretched as tight as she can be. When her bar job ends she is desperate to stay in school and stay in New York.

Her art school friends have lots of suggestions, but Nat needs money now. When she hears about Sugar Babies, she loathes having to go there, but go there she does.

All she has to do is hang out for a dinner or two and she gets paid. A part of her feels like a whore but the part that wants to have nice things and stay in New York wins over.

And that was where it went awry. The girl is 21. And not a big city girl. She talks so formally and the obsession comes so fast that it left me wondering if there was a deadline somewhere.  In the end, they were all despicable people.

The Last Second (A Brit in the FBI #6) By Catherine Coulter and J.T.Ellison

The Last Second (A Brit in the FBI, #6)

From New York Times bestselling authors Catherine Coulter and J.T. Ellison comes a riveting thriller pitting special agents Nicholas Drummond and Michaela Caine against a private French space agency that has the power to end the world as we know it.

Former NASA astronaut, Dr. Nevaeh Patel, was grounded when on a spacewalk off the ISS, her tether snapped and she made contact with the Numen, an alien race that wants her to tell the earth about them. So she does and is grounded for good with a psychiatric report that will keep her grounded. Angry, and frustrated, she finds Galactus, a private space agency owned by the uber rich Jean-Pierre Broussard.

Patel finds that he is also seeking a treasure, the Holy Grail and instantly understands the Numen want her to possess it and quiet the heavens so that they may come to her and teach the world peace and be immortal. But one must be worthy of the stone. An important catch.

While Broussard is off retrieving the Holy Grail, or Heavens Stone, Patel launches a communications satellite. Only this satellite is carrying a nuclear triggered EMP which when triggered will take out all of the satellites and leave the world in chaos.

When Agents Caine and Drummond are brought in they are in a big time crunch. One that may see them be too late to stop the world descending into chaos.

This Brit in the FBI series is one of my favorites. These two put you on the edge of your seat from the beginning and it’s a fast and thrilling ride to the end. I personally lost two fingernails to this book!

Coulter and Ellison can take an idea that is definitely possible and create something that will scare you for many nights to come. That is what I love. This could happen and what if it did? Well I hope that Drummond and Caine and all their cohorts are here for us too!

Another very well done thriller!

the night olivia fell by Christina McDonald

The Night Olivia Fell

An emotionally charged domestic suspense novel about a mother unraveling the truth behind how her daughter became brain-dead. And pregnant.

A search for the truth. A lifetime of lies.

Phone calls in the middle of the night are never a good thing. And for Abi Knight the phone call turns out to be the news every parent dreads receiving. Her daughter, Olivia, has been in an accident. She was found at the bottom of a bridge, bruised and broken.

The doctors say she is brain-dead and must remain on life support until her baby is further along. Baby? How could she not know her daughter was pregnant? And why are there bruises on her wrists?

The police may have ruled this an accident but Abi will go to hell and back to find out who did this to her daughter. And in doing so secrets are exposed, lives will never be the same.

Told with Olivia’s voice from the months leading up to her supposed accident and Abi’s voice in current time with some bad past secrets coming to light as well. And when you start spilling secrets, not everyone is on board.

This was one of the most heartbreaking and suspenseful books I’ve read in a while. I kept going back and forth with the characters. None of them were all bad or all good. They were your neighbors and their teenagers, people you’ve known all your life and yet how much do you really know your own family? We think we are protecting them but the secrets and lies always come to light and it always is painful.

This story will grab your heart and won’t let go until the last page. And even then, I still had hope.

Very Well Done!
