BLOG TOUR FOR THE FAMILY by PR BLACK

The Family

Becky was the only survivor of the horrific and ritualistic killing of her entire family. Injured and terrified she saw her opportunity to run and she did. Rescued by a man in the woods.

Adult Becky is doing everything she can to find out who the killer was and why he hasn’t been found. But when her digging starts getting people who help her killed in horrible ways, she doesn’t stop, she just goes harder. Not knowing who to trust may just get her killed herself before she can find out the truth.

This was a very explicit and horrifying read. As a character I didn’t care for Becky. But I did not see that ending!

THE SISTERS by KATE FORSTER

The Sisters

This one had everything! Spoiled rotten and filthy rich, the de Santoval triplets are a handful.

Grace is interested in nothing or no one except art. Violetta has just signed up for a reality show based on her love of partying and making the papers. Carlotta just wants to work with her horses and she’ll do anything to get what she wants.

When they receive a call saying their mother is in a coma and their father is on the lam with millions, their lives are turned inside out. All of them have dirty little secrets as well as some tragic ones.

We watch them go from very unlikable girls to strong adult women who have to learn to run their mother’s company, and in doing so they discover who they really are and what they really want.

I really loved this one. It had everything. Fashion, Art, Horses and women who take their destiny into their own hands, sleazy businessmen and cheating husbands as well as a man claiming to be their brother.

I loved their mother Birdie most of all. And I’m still not sure she didn’t know what was going on. Well Done!

Broken Dolls by Sarah Flint (DC Charlotte Stafford #4)

Broken Dolls (DC Charlotte Stafford #4)

Charlie is back! And this time it is the most vulnerable among us who are being targeted.

A newborn, dead in a dumpster. A young girl dead in an alleyway. Are they connected?

Feeling that time is of the utmost importance she and her boss Hunter, try to track down the baby’s mother and stumble onto a trafficking outfit. Importing young girls and grooming them to be prostitutes. Treated no better than a stray dog.

There are really two tales in play here. One story line is looking at the murders of the prostitutes and the other is the sex crimes. When one of their informants helps them put the pieces together they are sure they have the right people behind bars.

But do they? If something is broken over and over, will it ever be right again? Or will it just continue the pattern of hurt and lies. Can a person be beyond repair?

I always enjoy Charlie and I am hoping for more on Ben in the next one!

Well Done!

SUMMER IN A CORNISH COVE by KATE RYDER

Summer in a Cornish Cove

Oliver Foxley is an acclaimed movie star, global heartthrob and one half of Hollywood’s golden couple. But under the glare of the spotlight his ‘perfect’ life is slowly starting to crumble.

Cara Penhaligon is a struggling young Cornish artist, and widowed mother of two children. Life has been unbearably harsh to Cara, but meeting Oliver might just give her a second chance at the happiness she deserves. As each begins to heal the other, the pieces of Oliver’s frustrating jigsaw puzzle effortlessly fall into place. But as the Cornish summer draws to a close, Oliver faces the toughest of choices, and no one emerges quite as they were at the start.

Oliver Foxley seems to have it all together. He does not. He has been battling severe depression since he was a child. He has had some success holding it together, but it is getting harder. I got the feeling that his wife didn’t understand his condition as she seems to just want him to pull it together, which as we all know, doesn’t just magically happen with depression.

When he returns to Holy Isle, a retreat run by monks, he encounters a seriously disturbed young fan who turns into a stalker.

Cara, a widow and an artist has already had one great love in her life and is happy enough with what she has. Until she meets Oliver.

I think this is supposed to be a Romance, but the book needs some serious editing and character development. Characters are introduced and seem to be important to the story line and yet we are left hanging as to what happened to them.

Not to mention Oliver seemed a rather spineless man. Sleeping with more than one woman while his wife held down things at home. It was rather disjointed to be honest and I’m still not sure what the point was.

THE CANDLE FACTORY GIRL by TANIA CROSSE

The Candle Factory Girl: A gritty story of deceit and betrayal...

1930’s London – A backstreet saga full of hopes, dreams and the fight for survival. Perfect for the fans of Rosie Clarke and Lindsey Hutchinson.

Work at Price’s Candle Factory in Battersea is tedious for intelligent, seventeen-year-old Hillie Hardwick, but she knows she is lucky to have a job at all.

Her home life is no better, as she constantly battles with her exacted and bullying father in order to protect her mother and five younger siblings from his tyranny of abuse.

Her only solace is her loving relationship with the chaotic Parker family and her best friend, Gert Parker.

When matters violently escalate for Hillie, smitten Jack-the-Lad Jimmy Baxter seems her only salvation.

But could this be the biggest mistake of her life, and should she be looking for protection nearer home?

A story that crackles with unease where courage and friendship are the only hope.

Set in a time where women and girls did not have much say in their lives. It was acceptable to leave school at 14 and go to work. And that is what Hillie did. Much to her own dismay. She works and must turn her paycheck over to her father, who in turn physically and verbally abuses her on a daily basis as well as her mum.

Hillie doesn’t understand why her father does this. Why he hates her so much. She just wants out. And in her desperation she makes a choice she may later come to regret.

This story of families, secrets, hardship and life in the 30’s was a little sad, but ultimately seeing Hillie free herself allows other girls to stand up to their overbearing parents and grab the life and love that they want.

Good, Solid story!

Best Friends by Carys Jones (Aria) BlogTour

Best Friends

Four friends, a terrible secret, and one week to stay alive…

Grace doesn’t have a family. That was taken away one dreadful day when she was just six, and her twin brother Peter was killed. Instead she has her best friends and flatmates – Jasper, Franklin and Aaron – and nothing can tear them apart.

Living in London, and trying desperately to make a living, the four friends are rapidly running out of money and hope. So, when they find a discarded suitcase in a skip, they can’t believe their eyes when its contents seem to answer all their prayers.

But then there is a knock on their door, and a very disgruntled thug with revenge on his mind, gives them one week to return his belongings, or they will pay with their lives. Soon the fractures in their friendships begin to show, and when one of them ends up fighting for his life, the stakes are raised even higher.

Will any of them get to the end of the week alive, or will the best of friends become the deadliest of enemies..

I read this straight through with no stops. The room mates are all struggling to make ends meet and not give up on their dream jobs. It was the characters themselves that made this read so good. I liked every one of them!

Grace, the petite ballerina, has a tragic past but is struggling to achieve her dream of working for a ballet company, and overcome her self-doubt. With no family of her own to speak of, the flat mates have become her family.

Jasper, who wants to be a writer. Aaron, who puts his all into making it in the music industry and Franklin, an as yet undiscovered actor as well as one of the funniest characters in the book.

With the rent looming over their heads the lure of easy money is easy to succumb to. But someone was watching them remove that case from the dumpster. And that someone wants his money back. With the money already spent they all scramble to get enough money to be able to breathe easily again.

When one of them has a horrible accident they are all the more terrified. Positive that the thuggish guy had something to do with it and afraid they will be next, they will give up what they thought was most precious and find what actually is.

Well Done Ms. Jones!
