The From celebrity gossip expert and BuzzFeed culture writer Anne Helen Petersen comes an accessible, analytical look at how female celebrities are pushing boundaries of what it means to be an acceptable woman.
You know the type: the woman who won’t shut up, who’s too brazen, too opinionated, too much. She’s the unruly woman, and she embodies one of the most provocative and powerful forms of womanhood today. InΒ Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud, Anne Helen Petersen uses the lens of unruliness to explore the ascension of pop culture powerhouses like Lena Dunham, Nicki Minaj, and Kim Kardashian, exploring why the public loves to love (and hate) these controversial figures. With its brisk, incisive analysis,Β Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too LoudΒ will be a conversation-starting book on what makes and breaks celebrity today.
The book is 10 looks at women who are ‘too much’ for conventional society. Too Strong, Too Fat, Too Gross,Too Pregnant, Too Old, Too Shrill,Too Queer, Too Loud, Too Naked.
For as long as there have been conventional rules of society, there have been unruly women who push those boundaries to the breaking point. It’s okay to be slightly odd or different from the norm, but stray too far and suddenly you have the world judging you and trying to shame you back onto the straight and narrow path of traditional female roles.
IF you have an opinion that differs greatly from the crowd, you are suddenly attacked, talked about not in a good way. Strong women ignore that. They know their worth and remain true to themselves.
I really enjoyed reading this book and I think we could all take a good long look at it and ourselves. I for one intend to remain unruly and proud of it!
Well Done Ms. Petersen!
Who was it that said “well behaved women rarely make history “?

I don’t remember who said it but I love it. Hell I live it. My momma sure didn’t say it!

The quot has been attributed to several women but research shows it was Laurel Thatcher Ulrich who said it in her book by that name . I’ll research more when I get a working laptop . π‘ This sounds like a book I need to read. Have always been too well behaved. π© Not much fun. Thanks for sharing and making me think .

I haven’t read that book, but it sounds like something I want to read now. Thanks for reviewing it! I find it unsettling when people force you to conform for, “being too much.”
