Pekoe Most Poison…
Spring is making herself known all over! My Winter Teas have been stashed and all of the lighter ones moved to the front.
Tulips, daffodils, and hyacinth are everywhere. Spring wild onions. The herbs are up and Lavender is knee high and even wisteria is sitting lazily on the fence. The smells are pure bliss!
Chicks are here along with the ducklings.
When you are an overprotective parent you bring your babies to work.
All girls. This is still such a miracle to me!
The story of the infamous Mata Hari. Was she the spy she was accused and executed for being? Or simply a woman wanting to live life on her own terms? Either way it’s the language that is used that made this such a good read. The story is told through the last letter she wrote before her death, telling her life story. Although by the time she died I’m not sure she even knew what the truth was.
My favorite line in the book came after her death and was “Liars, what little I know of them, are people who seek popularity and recognition. Even when faced with truth, they always find a way to escape, coldly repeating what had just been said or blaming the accuser of speaking untruths.”
There is no doubt that she was an accomplished liar. Her one flaw that turned out to be part of her undoing was that she didn’t see that the people she was playing for her own gain, were also playing her. There is no loyalty when the armies are marching into your country. No one would be there for her at the end and that was sad but it really was her own doing.
There were some very profound truths in here. His books always stick with me long after I have read them. Now I wait for the next one!
In the #1 New York Times bestselling Mercy Thompson novels, the coyote shapeshifter has found her voice in the werewolf pack. But when Mercy’s bond with the pack—and her mate—is broken, she’ll learn what it truly means to be alone…
Attacked and abducted in her home territory, Mercy finds herself in the clutches of the most powerful vampire in the world, taken as a weapon to use against alpha werewolf Adam and the ruler of the Tri-Cities vampires. In coyote form, Mercy escapes—only to find herself without money, without clothing, and alone in the heart of Europe…
Unable to contact Adam and the rest of the pack, Mercy has allies to find and enemies to fight, and she needs to figure out which is which. Ancient powers stir, and Mercy must be her agile best to avoid causing a war between vampires and werewolves, and between werewolves and werewolves. And in the heart of the ancient city of Prague, old ghosts rise…
Oh my we wait so long for a new Mercy Thompson book! The last couple were a bit dark, but this one is more Mercy and Adam. Yes, she gets kidnapped, again. But this bad ass girl can protect her pack and get the job done.
Told from Mercy and Adams point of view, it is easy to read and always fun. Mercy is both fun and a bit snarky and I love that about her. Some of our old friends are back and some new ones come in.
Though a bit of a complicated plot, it ties up nicely and now we sit and wait for Ms. Briggs to give us our next Mercy adventure!
If you haven’t read the Mercy Thompson series, well why not? I would suggest that you start with the first one though so you know who is who.
I would have had this review done earlier but as soon as I got the book OU Boy snatched it out of my hand and ran to the bedroom with it. I think he may have snarled at me a few times! So yes, guys or gals, this series is delicious!
Some of the things I’m reading. The first one Sing,Unburied,Sing by Jesmyn Ward is making my heart bleed right now. It really is difficult to read about certain times in the history of our nation and this book is one of those. I have a feeling this one is going to be big!
Have yourself a Happy Little Monday!
Serious reading to do today and a perfect setting to do it in. I remember being little and laughing in the rain. These little boys just make me smile.
I think I better get on these and the 20 on my desk. Have a good one y’all!
As lovely as you! It has been an insane week. Some ups and some downs, but all in all, enlightening. Have you ever gotten to the point where you are praying the phone doesn’t ring with more sad news? That is what this week was like. A lot of calls and me yelling at the universe ‘Are you Kidding me???’ So the anxiety level has been off the charts.
Trying to be very Zen today and reading a book about a nasty serial killer…hmmm, what does that say about me??
With her fortieth birthday approaching, Lucy Carpenter thinks she finally has it all: a wonderful new husband, Jonah, a successful career and the chance of a precious baby of her own. Life couldn’t be more perfect.
But becoming parents proves much harder to achieve than Lucy and Jonah imagined, and when Jonah’s teenage daughter Camille comes to stay with them, she becomes a constant reminder of what Lucy doesn’t have. Jonah’s love and support are unquestioning, but Lucy’s struggles with work and her own failing dreams begin to take their toll. With Camille’s presence straining the bonds of Lucy’s marriage even further, Lucy suddenly feels herself close to losing everything…
This heart-wrenchingly poignant family drama from bestselling author Amanda Prowse asks the question: in today’s hectic world, what does it mean to be a mother?
Lucy has it all. Great career. Great apartment. Great wardrobe. But the one thing Lucy wants is a baby. And time is running out, when she meets and marries Jonah. As they try time and again to have a baby, it is just hearbreaking.
As Lucy struggles with miscarriages and with the strain on them as a couple she hopes that she and Jonah have a strong love that can withstand the pain, frustration and feelings of failure she deals with.
As Jonah’s teenaged daughter comes to stay, things get tense. She isn’t nice to Lucy and as hard as Lucy tries, she can’t get through.
I did enjoy the questions that arose on having it all.
Always a pleasure to read Amanda’s books! Thanks to Netgalley and Lake Union Lake Union Publishing!
The most recent book from Shipman, following close behind the best selling The Charm Bracelet is as brilliantly done as The Charm Bracelet was.
Shipman is so good at weaving themes into his writing. Hope, Love, Faith, Kindness and Family. This particular story was beautiful. And sad. And hearbreaking. It was also full of hope and love and family and how important they are to us all.
We begin in the present with Don and Mattie Tice packing up all of their belongings from their home on the lake in Michigan and getting ready to move into town. Mattie has ALS and has advanced to the point where she is wheelchair dependant. As Don packs everything up, Mattie relives all of the wonderful memories she had in this house. With her parents, and then Don. It’s where her heart is. She never thought she would leave it. Hope Dunes is in her heart and soul.
As they settle into the house in town, Don is to the point where he knows he needs help with Mattie and here we meet Rose and her young daughter Jeri. Rose has her own problems and one is keeping her family home from being sold. She needs a job now.
When Don and Mattie meet Rose and Jeri they all know it’s a perfect match. And the book bounces between the past and the present, as they go through all the memories in Mattie’s hope chest.
All the special things that would have gone to Mattie and Don’s daughter if they had been blessed with children are taken out and stories told and new memories are made.
What a moving and lovely story this was. This is a book with a lot of feeling. And yes, there was some crying, but laughing too.
Thank you Netgalley and St.Martin’s Press for this early copy. The book is available on March 21, 2017.
